Being a positive person is a conscious choice. In a world mired in negativity and superficiality it gets all the more challenging to maintain a positive attitude and mindset. But there is tremendous power in a positive attitude. How we assume to live our lives and with whom we choose to surround ourselves with is influenced by whether we choose to be a positive or a negative person. The power in assuming a positive attitude has no ceiling, but it is a decision each of us must make. So let’s look at how to achieve and maintain a positive attitude.
How to achieve and maintain a positive attitude
I have worked with hundreds upon hundreds of young people over the years in the capacity of counselor and mentor. The stories I have listened to go from the every day run of the mill stressors to heart wrenching life situations. But regardless of situation, the attitude the young person chooses to assume makes a monumental difference in their experience of their present as well as the outlook of their future. Mindset is everything. There is power in being positive. As a counselor, there have been moments when I have looked into the eyes of a student facing adversity that I couldn’t imagine going through. When that young person is able to crack a smile, find gratitude in their situation and believe it will get better I am inspired and blown away at the ability that individual has to go forward instead of backward. They have opted to not only survive through their situation, but rise above it to the best of their ability.
THE POWER IN BEING POSITIVE!!!!!!!!
There are different seasons in life. Some last longer than others. It is convenient to fold and roll around in self-pity and have Eeyore as our wing man. That’s easy. The blaring truth is that when we digest negatives about ourself and our life there’s an element of self prophecy that occurs. We go from telling ourselves negatives to believing them and expecting them. Once that switch has been flipped it begins a cycle of negativity that is exhausting. You then allow yourself to enter a boxing ring where you are up against your opponent, you. How tiring and depleting does the day become when you are constantly up against words and outlook that do nothing but bring you down? No thanks.
Being negative
can sometimes be a tempting slope to slide down, but it’s not worth it. Believe that you are worth more than any negativity that you can hit yourself with or that you can be hit with. This takes effort. Part of this begins with who you opt to surround yourself with. If you’re a positive person aiming to lift up all of those around you that can be exhausting and unrealistic. You can inspire, you can encourage, but your inner circle must consist of those who make you better, challenge you and strengthen you. Positive, very rarely will uplift negative when it comes to those that you surround yourself with. It’s just the reality of life. Remember, iron sharpens iron. Positive encourages positive. Negative reaps negative.
Over the past few years I have made some tweaks in my life. In order for me to be the best wife, mom, friend, counselor and even surfer;) I have to fight for me. And I have to be selective in who I associate with and who I invest my time with. There is a conscious effort to maintain a positive outlook even when it’s so much easier to fold and roll with negative. I feel better about myself when I’m kind of layered in positive and that rocks. I refuse to dread getting out of bed in the morning, to not enjoy what I do for a living, to not love being the best parent/wife/daughter/ I can be. That would be super bummer fest. My outlook, my inner social circle plays a huge roll in that. I believe that I’m worth fighting for and so should you.
Challenge yourself
To take a step back over the next few days and evaluate who you surround yourself with, what comes out of your mouth and the attitude you possess as you go throughout your day. Take forty eight hours to be super conscientious in what kind of attitude you start and end your day with. There is always room for growth and improvement, but that comes to a stand still when we are not willing to take the first step. Do it. I challenge you. Transitioning from negatives to positive takes time and effort, but it is so worth it.
Wishing you an awesome week of super positives! You can do this!
Peace, love and goodness!
